Tuesday’s Take: Traditional Christmas Movies

We have so many now it’s hard to choose a favorite to sit down and watch with the family.

It’s A Wonderful Life=I still love it even though it doesn’t have any special effects, little comedy, and bears absolutely no resemblance to any family I have ever known. The story makes me feel good. It reminds me to appreciate what I have and that I am exactly where I’m meant to be.

Plus, Jimmy Stewart will rock forever.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation= Chevy Chase at his best. This is one of my all time favorites and the one that reminds me the most of my own family. Sadly, I’m not joking. The ball of lights must be untangled every year and at least one person has an episode before the holiday is over. And doesn’t everyone have a cousin like Randy Quaid? You do if you live in Texas.

But most of the time the hilarity is the same, and this movie teaches us without a sense of humor…no one gets out alive.

The Santa Clause= Who can compete with the comic timing of Tim Allan? Or the adorable cuteness of Eric Lloyd? No one.

When that kid jerks a tear…so do I. I can’t watch this movie without aching to believe again.

Elf= This is just fun from beginning to end. Just like all of Will Ferrell’s movies, I’m not sure what the message is…but who cares? It’s Will Ferrell…in tights. Just laugh and let go of some of that holiday stress.

These movies are each from a different generation but they all serve the same purpose, to entertain and fill us with holiday joy. There are so many more, Miracle on 34th Street (remake with the hotness that is Dylan McDermott), The Christmas Story, and if you want something hip and different you can always watch The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Whichever one you choose, may your holiday be bright and happy. May you remember that the best presents are the ones from the heart and being with the people you love is the greatest gift of all…except for like Prada boots. But you get my point.

Pardon me; I have to go…Cousin Eddie is trying to eat the wax centerpiece on the table.

Happy Holidays!!!

  1. I love Elf! It's really grown on me.

My all-time fave Christmas movie, though, will always be A Christmas Story. I just adore Ralphie.

  2. Elf is so great! For the finals season it's all you can hear my college-aged peers quoting around campus.

  3. Blessed Christmas to you, Marsha! I've seen all of these except for the Chevy Chase one.

    "It's A Wonderful Life" is a good movie--good reminder about what's important--you nailed that.

"The Santa Clause" is good--Tim Allen rocks it and the little boy is cute.

"Elf" is hysterical. I don't know how many times I shook my head watching that film going "No, he didn't just do that! Oh my gosh he did!" LOL :-)
