Flashback: Indecent Proposal

Remember the movie Indecent Proposal? It starred Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson, and the forever fine Robert Redford.

Set in Las Vegas, it was about a seemingly high roller (Robert Redford) and a married couple who in a desperate attempt to save everything they own, decide to try their luck at the games. When they lose, Robert Redford approaches them with a proposal…one million dollars for one night with the wife.

It was sappy, some of the acting was just plain bad but the premise was awesome and it sparked conversations in every household, whether you watched the movie or not. Would you be willing to let your wife spend the night with someone else for a million dollars? Would you be willing to save your family by spending the night with a stranger?

My thoughts…if he looked like this:

I would sacrifice myself happily.

This…

Not so much.

Of course, my husband empathized with Woody Harrelson and stared with disgust at Robert Redford throughout the show. He told me very seriously there was no way he could ever get over something like that and would absolutely never agree to it.

I didn't doubt a word.

But I couldn’t help but wonder if the situation were reversed and someone offered me a million dollars for a night with my husband, what would I say? We have had our bad years and our good ones, as anyone married for a long time can testify too. The one thing I have learned is money has nothing to do with being happy; you have to do that for yourself and for each other. So, as I looked at my husband of many years, the love of my life, the father of my children, I can tell you quite honestly and without hesitation…I would pimp him out for half that.

Those kids aren’t getting to college on their own.

What would you do?

  1. The "forever fine" Robert Redford. Love it.

I have no idea what I would do. Because you have to wonder what kind of person would make such an offer. What would that night REALLY be like? (Think American Psycho) One night can be traumatizing. And just not worth the money. But, then again, when you're out of options, you'll do anything!

  2. I'd pimp my husband out to Danny DeVito for a trip to Europe.

  3. HA! "Those kids aren't getting to college on their own."

    That's too funny.

For me, I learned a couple of years ago that money isn't everything. In fact, money means very little. I wouldn't pimp myself out or my husband. If we have each other, the other stuff matters very little to me.

  4. Oh my goodness, now I'm laughing. :)
And it's a difficult question, I suppose, but I don't think I could ever do that. It's the sort of thing you could never see all the consequences of until it's too late, and I'm a bit timid when it comes to things like that. Still, it'd be tempting. :)

  5. Amen girl! ;) Of course I can't let near anyone near my handsome husband. But if I needed to do something like this....there are a few options I'd like to explore....

It helps to know I'm not just talking to myself.
