Between the Lines

Within the stories we read, watch, and write, are some truly amazing lines. Lines that make us tremble with emotion and stay with us long after the details of a story fade away.

"I will think of you as dead, until my husband makes it so…then I will think of you no more."-Rob Roy (movie):

"Are there any questions?" –Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale (1986)

“...So do we pass the ghosts that haunt us later in our lives; they sit undramatically by the roadside like poor beggars, and we see them only from the corners of our eyes, if we see them at all."- Stephen King The Dark Tower IV

"My dear, I don't give a damn."-Margaret Mitchell, Gone With the Wind

The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, and miles to go
before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep.-Robert Frost Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.

"Here's the deal -- I'm the best there is. Plain and simple. I wake up in the morning and I piss excellence."-Ricky Bobby aka Will Ferrell

"This is public school, if I can keep the girls off the pole and the boys off the pipe...I get a bonus." -Principle Gibbons in Easy A.

And one of the lines I’m most proud of in my current wip: Sometimes hate doesn’t need a reason…just a target.

What’s some of your favorite lines?

  1. "That'll do, Donkey. That'll do." Shrek ( I think there's a Charlotte's Web throwback in there, but it's been a while.)

"Okay. I love you. Bye-bye!" Elvira, Tiny Toons.

"When a woman gives birth to a crak baby, you do not buy her a puppy." Emily Gilmore. Gilmore Girls.

  2. Those are good lines, including the one from your WIP. And I LOVE that picture. So cool.

"I piss excellence." I'll be laughing at that one all day.

Also, I gave you an award on my blog. :))

  3. Love those lines. One I'm married to from my WIP:

"Folks say he all but stole the ranch, but he got the bad luck for free."

  4. That Rob Roy quote is fantastic. Unfortunately the only book I can quote from with any authority is Pride & Prejudice, and it never has the same impact of emotion.

One of my favourite quotes is: "No lace, Mrs Bennett, I beg you. No lace." Mr Bennett on being overwhelmed with news of a dance.

    See, not the same :-)

  5. From my current read, first line: "The circus arrives without warning."

This one is good, too, though I'm not sure I'll get it exactly right: "Love is a dung heap upon which I crow." Also from Rob Roy and I'll bet you can guess who says it :)

  6. Great lines. I can never remember the really good lines I read or that I've written. With reading, I always mean to capture them but then I'm pulled to the next page and their gone. Short attention span theatre for me, I guess.

  9. Those are great lines!

There's a line from a novel I wrote that is among my favorites of the ones I've written: "Nobility is a paradox".

  10. Good lines indeed. Stephen King is a mad genius, and anyone who says otherwise is a close-minded twit. Pigeonhole readers really do need to check him out. I know that's off-topic, but I'm a big King fan:)

It helps to know I'm not just talking to myself.
