Novel Ideas

Where does your story ideas come from? Stephenie Meyers said the idea for Twilight came to her in a dream. J.K. Rowling claims the idea for Harry Potter popped into her head during a train ride. I know that my idea for The Pinching Wars came from an offhand comment one of my co-workers made one day about his child's school.

I know that writers and all artists have a greater than average imagination but what do you think sets it off? When an idea pops into your head what makes you pursue it and shape it into a story? Where did your last idea come from? Please let me know in the comments section, I am fascinated by this!

  1. My last idea came from a house I saw in town. An old Victorian style home. All of the sudden I started to "see" the things that could happen there...characters popped in to mind, etc.

Most ideas I can't trace back to anything, but that is one that sticks out in my mind.

Good question. I'm interested to see what others say.

  2. When I was in the hospital last May (refusing a blood transfusion after surgery gone slightly awry and arguing with doctors about that very issue) I prayed. All sort of plot lines came running in my mind. The most vivd being the WIP I just finished.

  3. I wish I could say a dream, but you don't even want to know what my dreams are like. Usually riding in the car I guess. That's when my mind wonders. Daydreams!

  4. Normally I couldn't say this, but I got part of the idea formy current WIPfrom a dream. It was just a piece of it.

My work currently being edited was triggered when reading a novel. I got to remembering about how I love dark male characters (more often than not, brooding at least at some point in the novel). I'll be getting that one back in September from my editor (free-lance editor).

As to the rest...it could be dreams, a passing thought, something someone said, a book I'm reading, a vague idea that fleshes out somehow. Different things trigger me.

  5. Great question. My idea came to me one day when I really wanted something to read. It hit me all at once after flipping through channels on TV. BAM! I questioned something I saw and started looking up the ideas online. Everything I put together was lining up into a fantastic story. It was then I knew I had to share it. Me, the girl who hadn't written much more than a few term papers in high school.

It helps to know I'm not just talking to myself.
