Wednesday’s Word: Celebriosity

Celebrities and their generosity can be an awesome thing. They make the bucks. No one is denying that but they are also among the first to give back to those who are less fortunate, most of the time without anyone being aware.

Jackie Chan reportedly donated $100, 00 to Chrysalis, a Los Angeles-based charity fighting homelessness. He also donated $64, 000 to UNICEF to aid in the tsunami relief effort.

Celine Dion made a contribution of one million dollars to aid with the hurricane Katrina effort.

Nicholas Cage gave one million dollars to the Katrina effort.

Sandra Bullock shared one million dollars with the American Red Cross after Sept. 11th, and another million for aid in tsunami relief in December 2004.

Paul McCartney and Heather Mills donated 1.9 million dollars for aid after the tsunami.

Steven Spielberg bestowed 1.5 million for the tsunami effort, and another 1.5 million for aid of hurricane Katrina.

Angelina Jolie has donated over $3 million of her personal wealth to United Nations Refugee Agency.

In 2001, Arnold Schwarzenegger evidently shared 15 percent of his entire income that year, totaling $4.1 million to various charities including the Nelson Mandela children's fund and the Twin Towers fund.

In 2008, Rush Limbaugh donated $4.2 million to the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation, a charity that helps support the children of Marines or federal law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty.

I can’t help but admire those more that do not publicize their charitable acts. Using it for a publicity stunt cheapens it.

This website has an alphabetical list of celebrities and the charity’s they support. The sheer numbers will boggle your mind. So hats off to these people and their immense Celebriosity.

And that, my friends, is the Word.

  2. I suppose if you scaled things down my meager charitable contributions would seem pretty amazing when put in context. Am I in a mood today or what? lol! I'm grateful they are not tight with their wallets.

  3. How generous of them. I love that word, by the way: Celebriosity. :)

  4. I agree that telling people you're giving cheapens it. It's nice to see that many people are socially responsible with their wealth!

  5. There were quite a few country music entertainers who gave to the Nashville flood relief efforts. Of course, most of it didn't get where it was supposed to go, as I wrote about on my blog yesterday. It's a shame, too. People mean well and really want to help but these organizations end up distributing the money into their general fund and cooking the books to justify it all.

  6. :) thanks for posting that list. It's the sort of thing that makes you smile, isn't it? Maybe the world isn't as messed up as we think. Maybe it IS as messed up as we think, but there's hope where we don't expect it. :D

It helps to know I'm not just talking to myself.
