Friday Flashback:Summer

Sunlight so bright it hurt your eyes and burned your skin. Running barefoot on manicured lawns and steaming blacktops. Lemonade stands and drinking from the garden hose. The day we started a turf war in the neighborhood…that ended when we had to be home before the streetlights came on and everyone forgot by the next morning.

The beautiful boy who lived across the street and had no idea I existed. Long legs and floppy hair that fell across his face as he laughed up at the sky.

Clear nights with a million twinkling stars and fireflies flashing warning signals to each other that I am near…my glass jar poised to strike.

My mom cooking over an open fire with my brother looking on in what appears to be some sort of early gay fashion…ok I made that up.

It was the best time of our lives…if only we’d known at the time.

What reminds you of childhood summers?

  1. Aw, this is so sweet. I love the line about fireflies.

Dr. Pepper reminds me of summer.

  2. Beautiful poem and tribute to your childhood! I love this post!

The beach and the salty sea air at our summer house. Horsehoe crab fights. Yes they were as disgusting as they sound! I remember catching fireflies too.

Thanks for bringing back fond memories:)

  3. I had a magical summer in Europe one summer, complete with cute boy and all. It was heaven....

  4. Childhood... I would give anything to revisit that time. Why is it we never appreciate anything until we're looking back on it??

I have to agree with you about the fireflies, the warm starry nights, and that totally hot guy that lives across the street. They're always has to be one of those. LOL.

It helps to know I'm not just talking to myself.
