Monday Must: Wonder Why

Now that True Blood is over for the season and Vampire Diaries is just beginning, it makes me wonder why I like these shows exactly.  What appeals to me about them but not this one?

It came to me that it’s a combination of dark humor and witty dialogue. Of course, the excitement of forbidden love with mega hot guys helps but still…if they weren’t smart and witty with that underlying thread of humor…I wouldn’t like them. The show would be ‘dead’ boring, predictable, and not one I would watch.  Like The Gates.

Not everyone feels the same way, that’s obvious. I have a co-worker who loves this show and another one that never actually got into True Blood. I don’t hold it against them…too much. But it makes me wonder if maybe the reason we are writers is that we see a little deeper or from a different angle than others. Or maybe we are compelled to create new lives and stories because one is just not enough for us.

Do you know why you write?

  1. I like The Gates just because I love anything vampire...anything! The writing isn't great and the plots are cheesy, but I go in knowing that, so I actually enjoy it. Plus I like Rhona Mitra (and Clark Griswold's daughter from Vegas Vacation as Sara).

  2. I think that's EXACTLY why I write. It's a kind of healthy escapism (at least I tell myself it's healthy). It allows me to imagine I'm anything I ever wanted to be but couldn't. I can't sing on key to save my life but I can write about a touring band. I can't fly without wings but I can create a character who can fly as easily as she can walk.

  3. One day I'm going to purchase the Vampire diaries and True Blood and see exactly what the big hype is about. Oh wait, hot guys, forbidden love??? *off to Netflicks*

  4. YAY Vampire Diaries! I love that show!! Probably too much. And True Blood is done with until next summer. *tear* Such a long time from now. The Gates, however, is so-so. I watch, but only because nothing else' on tv. :)

  6. I think I write because my brain is overactive and I make all these connections "regular" people don't make between every day stuff. You've seen my blog, you know how strange things get connected, like pooping and storytellying, for example.

  7. I love Vampire Dairies. Don't get HBO although True Blood is on my Netflix list, and I never watched The Gates, the commercials didn't make it compelling enough.

  8. I agree! We pick out things because we study stories. It's, like, what we do! Now don't hate me...but I couldn't get into True Blood. *ducks* Don't hate me! Aw! =)

But I wouldn't call the show bad. It's quite good! But I couldn't get into it and I'm not sure why, exactly. I've read some of the books, and enjoy those more than the show. I got more into Supernatural.

And perhaps this is because I don't have HBO, so I'm always a season behind in True Blood, and sort of hear what happens before I get a chance to see it...that could do it!

I am digging Vampire Diaries! I hope that redeems me!

  9. I'm just not into the vampire thing at all but if you're gonna watch one, watch the best!

It helps to know I'm not just talking to myself.
