Wednesday’s Word: Damonize

I have heard it said almost anything can be an analogy for writing. Well, I give you one more.

Damon Salvatore (known to his mother as Ian Somerhalder). He is the force that elevates The Vampire Diaries from an average teen vamp series to an Awesome Hour of Pure Happy. I’m not joking.

If we did a character study of him the following words would apply:

Dangerous
Fearless
Charming
Unpredictable
Witty
Pragmatic
Irresistible

And it all comes in very attractive package.

He is everything I want my writing to be. Who wouldn’t? Damon is the epitome of good writing skills. This character makes me gasp in shock and laugh out loud…sometimes in the span of a few seconds. He has the ability to make you tear up when he is hurt and want to slap him when he hurts others. I have never seen a more fleshed out, well rounded characterization than this.

If your writing is lacking in any way but you can’t put your finger on exactly what it is, maybe you need to Damonize it. I suggest staring at his picture for as long as possible…and keep a napkin handy for any helpless drooling that occurs.

And that, my friends, is the Word.

  1. Helpless drooling indeed. I do like multidimensional characters and I totally agree we need to write them! Cute doesn't hurt either.

  2. What? Did you say something? Because I was too busy looking at those pictures!

PS: Damon Salvatore (aka-Ian Somerhalder) was in Dallas last weekend for a Vampire Diaries event. I found out about it too late and didn't get a wristband. :( Maybe it's for the best. I would probably be in jail for following him or holding on and never letting go about now if I had gone. :)

    So pretty!

  3. Seems women are suckers (no pun intended!) for guys like this. But haven't we noticed these are the guys who usually let you down? The dependable, seemingly boring guys are the ones who come through for us.

I think that applies more to our writing routine that what we create. We need discipline and order in our writing lives, so something wild and crazy comes from our fingertips!

It helps to know I'm not just talking to myself.
