Planking Not Plankton

Writers are natural observers, or we should be if we want to write realistic stories.  Keeping up with the latest trends is a must, depending on what your genre is but especially if you write YA.  I know having teens at home and writing about them usually keeps me in the Fad Loop.  I love them all, the crazier the better.  Recently I was told of a new one called Planking.

Planking or the lying down game is an activity consisting of lying face down in an unusual or incongruous location. The hands must touch the sides of the body and having a photograph of the participant taken and posted on the internet is an integral part of the game.

This is not to be confused with Plankton, the villain from Spongebob Squarepants.

Oh, Plankton, always trying to steal a krabby pattie.

The term 'planking' originated in Australia and has taken over there and in New Zealand and now halfway around the world in America.  Just see for yourself.

Street Planking W/Pets

Extreme Planking

And now...Baby Planking

Planking will probably be gone before we manage to include it in a story but still...it may be the most hilarious fad yet, next to wearing your pants belted around your thighs.

'Cause that's never getting old.

  1. Thank you for the information. It would be embarrassing to begin administering CPR to an unsuspecting planker.

  2. Ha! I don't know where you find this stuff. Yesterday I read about the strike-a-casual-pose-while-jumping-off-a-diving-board fad. You know, people posing as though they're reading magazines or talking on the phone before plunging into the pool. It's better than sniffing glue I suppose.

  3. So this is a game? My, haven't we become a lethargic society. Next thing ya know, it'll be an Olympic sport. I can already see the awards ceremony.

  4. I wish pants-beneath-butt fad would pass! Sadly, I heard of a youth fall to his death by planking on a condo railing. Need safe planking!

  5. This planking video kills me every time (it's only 30 seconds): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7G1y23J-lso&feature=related

And every time I see one of those kids with the really low pants, I want to yank them down. But I suppose... maybe that's the point.
