Wednesday’s Word: Suckology

Today’s word is Suckology, which is the psychology of suck. This is the belief that at some point whether it is your past, present or future…you will suck. It is nothing to be ashamed of. People are speaking up all over the blogosphere to tell their stories of how suck has affected them and why is doesn’t have to be a bad thing.

My awesome friend Lisa
Natalie Whipple
Even Maggie Stiefvater

You can bemoan the fact that you are infected with suck or you can take heart in the knowledge that it affects thousands. How you choose to deal with your condition is completely up to you.

Embrace the Suck. This is a favorite motto of military veterans. They know how to dig deep and draw on those reserves of strength to keep going…keep pushing…to never give up.
And they are hot.

But I digress.

You can lead a productive life and have a fulfilling career even while battling suck. There are people who are more than willing to help alleviate your suckage. Critique groups, editors, and eventually agents will all help. There are several self-help options available such as extensive blog reading of industry professionals, local writing courses, and of course lots of practice.

Remember…you are not alone and hopefully understanding Suckology will help you in this fight.
I not only study this condition…but I suffer from it as well.

And that, my friends, is the Word.

Bonus Material:
How to determine your Suck Factor

This number is a variable and changes on a seemingly random basis. Your beginning number can be obtained by endless reading and honest comparisons. However, with time and practice you can drive your number down to a reasonable figure. Remissions do occur and your suck factor can almost disappear but warning…it can return with a vengeance if you are not vigilant.

  4. Keep. Moving. Forward. That's all we can do, right? Don't dwell. One step at a time. And we'll all get somewhere!

Good post! Also - great critique partners who give great advice and pick-me-ups at times of suckage are also awesome! =)

It helps to know I'm not just talking to myself.
