Wednesday's Word:Wordilicous

There are many writers who love to invent new words for their stories, and do it extremely well.

JK Rowling gave us ‘muggles’ and ‘Quidditch’, along with dozens of cool spells. Some of her words have a distinct British feel to them but they roll off the tongue and delight the senses no matter where you live. They have become a part of the English language and her brilliance will be remembered forever. There is no better way to honor a writer’s work.

But long before Harry Potter and the world of Wizards and Witchcraft, Lewis Carroll (real name-Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) wrote Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. There can be no comparison to his genius. The words he invented for his stories are strange and beautiful, even if the objects they describe are not.

Some words melt in your mouth and you can’t help but repeat them over and over. After watching Tim Burton’s adaptation of the Alice story, and Helena Bonham Carter’s stunning portrayal of the Red Queen, I was prone to shout out unexpectedly ‘She killed my Jabba-Baby-Wokie.’ for several days afterwards. It’s fun and when done in your office, keeps co-workers off guard and on their toes. Don’t worry, when you’re published they will all look back at this time and muse about creative you were.

If I ever have to eat my words, I hope they are as wordilicous as these have been.

And that, my friends, is the Word.

PS: Before anyone worries about my chances for advancement in day job...there is a guy in sales that everytime I pass by he says in a dead, cold voice 'It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again' from Silence of the Lambs.  We might actually need to worry about him.

  1. Haha! I reread Lewis Carroll from time to time just to enjoy his genius. He is an inspiration. Such insight into society that will always hold true. And yes, his great inventive words:)

  2. Yikes that's creepy! BTW, I hated that movie. As for making up words isn't that what artistic license is all abut? If not, tell me how to use that darn thang!

  3. I love inventing words! Sometimes I'll invent much more commonplace and less specialized words than Quidditch and Jabberwocky because they sound better and make more sense than the real word (which I often can't think of anyway). Maybe that's a voice thing, or maybe I'm just lazy...

It helps to know I'm not just talking to myself.
